Mercyhurst University is raising funds to help endow a scholarship in the name of Karen Christensen Williams, a longtime Spanish faculty member who died in April 2019 from breast cancer. Her parents, Roger and Mary Ann Christensen, made a generous donation to launch the scholarship, and the Advancement office is seeking to raise at least another $5,000 help grow the endowment. Dr. Williams taught in the Department of World Languages and Cultures for nearly 23 years. She was a dedicated and generous teacher, colleauge, and friend. Her course on Introduction to Sociolinguistics was considered by many to be one of the finest courses offered at Mercyhurst. She was born and raised in Iowa, earning her bachelor's degree from Iowa State University, and her master's and doctorate from the University of Georgia.
The scholarship endowment will create an annual award given to a student majoring or minoring in Spanish. Preference will be given to rising junior Spanish Education majors, then Spanish majors, followed by Spanish minors.
